The Ingredients
There are two main ingredients needed to make this Protein Hot Chocolate recipe:
1. Chocolate-Flavored Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides—This Vital Proteins chocolate collagen powder gets its rich, chocolatey flavor from alkalized cocoa powder and a touch of stevia. You’d never even know this protein hot chocolate recipe was healthy because collagen is flavorless!

You can also use your favorite plant-based milk; although options such as almond, oat, and coconut milk significantly decrease the protein content. If you want a high-protein plant-based option, I’d give pea milk or soy milk a try.
Extra Toppings – Nothing more is needed to enjoy the perfect cup of high-protein hot chocolate; however, you may want to make it fun and festive! Ingredients like whipped cream, marshmallows, candy canes, crushed peppermint candies, sprinkles, and shaved chocolate are great additions to make your protein hot chocolate extra special for Christmas brunch.

Equipment Needed
The only equipment you’ll need to make this protein hot chocolate recipe is a wire whisk and a small to medium-sized saucepan.
My favorite pots and pans are the Cuisinart stainless steel cookware set. It’s a set of twelve and includes a 1.5 Quart saucepan with cover, 3 Quart saucepan with cover, 3.5 Quart sauté pan with helper handle and cover, 8 Quart stockpot with cover, 8″ skillet, 10″ skillet, 20cm steamer insert with cover! There’s so much goodness in one set.

This recipe couldn’t be easier to make and requires minimal effort.
Add the milk and collagen protein powder to a saucepan. Now, over medium/high heat, whisk the mixture until it is fully combined, smooth, and hot!

Does collagen protein powder work in hot drinks?
Most collagen supplements are tasteless, therefore adding them to foods and beverages does not affect their flavor. Collagen works in various hot and cold drinks if you fully whisk/mix the powder in, ensuring there are no clumps.
Final Notes
You can make a batch of this protein hot chocolate and store it in a large mason jar in the refrigerator for about 5 days if you’d like! This way, it’s already mixed, and all you must do now is pour a portion into a mug and heat it back up in the microwave (or on the stove) for about 2 minutes. I did that this week, and it tastes good as new when reheated.
Now you’ll have to decide if you’re going to drink it plain or add some festive toppings as shown above! You really can’t go wrong with peppermint protein hot chocolate with whipped cream. Marshmallows, holly berry sprinkles, and crushed candy cane pieces are also fun additions. Enjoy!!!

Yes. This hot chocolate provides a high dose of protein while also supporting skin, hair, nails, joints, and connective tissue. Collagen is the most abundant protein in the body, and combining it with milk makes this a satisfying, nutrient-dense drink.
Yes. Collagen dissolves well in both hot and cold beverages. As long as you whisk it thoroughly, it blends smoothly without clumps and does not affect the flavor.
It tastes like regular hot chocolate. Collagen itself is flavorless, and the chocolate flavor comes from cocoa powder and a touch of stevia in the chocolate collagen peptides.
Yes. Almond, oat, or coconut milk all work, but they significantly reduce the protein content. If you want a higher-protein plant-based option, pea milk or soy milk are better choices.
Yes. The chocolate collagen peptides are keto-friendly, paleo-friendly, and gluten-free. Just be mindful of the milk you choose if you’re following a specific diet.
Yes. You can make a batch and store it in an airtight container or mason jar in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. Reheat on the stovetop or in the microwave before serving (or drink it cold as chocolate milk!)
Absolutely. Reheating does not affect the collagen. Just warm it gently and whisk before serving.
Collagen can clump if added to very hot liquid all at once. To prevent this, whisk continuously while heating so the powder dissolves evenly.
This hot chocolate is great on its own, but toppings like whipped cream, marshmallows, crushed peppermint, candy canes, shaved chocolate, or sprinkles make it extra festive, especially for the holidays.
Collagen is generally considered safe, but you should consult a healthcare professional if you have questions about serving it to children.
Yes. With 32 grams of protein per serving, this hot chocolate can support muscle recovery and help you meet daily protein needs in a cozy, comforting way.
